Choose the viscosity and standard your owner's manual specifies. API diesel engine oil categories start with C, such as CK-4 and CI-4. In Europe, ACEA C-category oils are low-SAPS oils made to work with exhaust aftertreatment such as a diesel particulate filter (DPF) — if your manual calls for one, use it.

What's the difference between API CK-4 and CI-4?+

Both are API diesel engine oil categories. CI-4 dates from 2002 and was made for engines with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). CK-4 arrived at the end of 2016, and API says CK-4 oils can be used in engines that call for CJ-4, CI-4 or CH-4.

What oil does a diesel with a DPF need?+

Use the standard in your owner's manual. Oils made for DPF-equipped engines are low-SAPS oils such as ACEA C categories, because ash from oil additives doesn't burn off and builds up in the filter.

How often should I change diesel engine oil?+

Follow your owner's manual first. Our guideline is full synthetic 10,000 km, semi-synthetic 7,000 km, or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Each card shows the interval for that oil.
