Gear oils and transmission fluids are not interchangeable, so choose the type and standard your owner's manual specifies. API GL-5 is for gears — especially hypoid gears in differentials. Automatic transmissions use the ATF their maker specifies, and a CVT needs CVT fluid made for it.

What's the difference between GL-5, ATF and CVT fluid?+

They're different fluids. GL-5 is an API standard for gear oil used on gears, especially hypoid gears in differentials. ATF is for automatic transmissions, and CVT fluid is only for CVTs. Don't swap one for another.

Can I use GL-5 where my manual says GL-4?+

Don't swap it yourself. Gear oil makers say GL-5's extreme-pressure additives can be corrosive to the yellow-metal parts in some synchromesh gearboxes. Use the standard your owner's manual specifies.

How do I know which gear oil my car needs?+

Check the fluids section of your owner's manual — it lists the type, standard and viscosity. You can also ask a store before ordering.
