Use the DOT grade your vehicle maker specifies — it's usually marked on the brake fluid reservoir cap and in the owner's manual. DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based, while DOT 5 is silicone-based, so don't mix them. Keep brake fluid clean and dry.

Can DOT 5 be mixed with DOT 3 or DOT 4?+

No. DOT 5 is a silicone-based fluid, while DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based. Vehicle and brake makers say they shouldn't be used together.
